Bilateral agreements governing pension insurance also exist with the following countries: with Austria`s accession to the European Union on 1 January 1995, the corresponding EU rule in the field of social security also became applicable to Austria. In this respect, particular emphasis should be made on Regulation (EC) No 833/04. All these agreements are based on the concept of shared responsibility. Shared responsibility agreements are reciprocal. Under each agreement, partner countries make concessions on their social security rules so that people covered by the agreement have access to payments for which they might not otherwise be entitled.
